(16/8)…Sanur Village
Festival (SVF) presents a jazz music performance presenting Balawan &
Batuan Ethnic Fusion on Thursday (16/8) evening. The Balinese musician,
originally named Wayan Balawan, held a one hour concert. Hundreds of visitors
at Inna Grand Bali Beach Cottage Area were amazed with superb his guitar
playing.
Playing his
hit number, he attempted to entertain through his skillful music talent. His
music becomes an extraordinary experience for the listeners. Born in 1973, he
was a man raised in an Balinese gamelan music environment. In 1993 he had the
opportunity to study jazz in Australian Institute of Music, Sydney, for two years. In 1997 he went home
to Bali and established the Batuan Ethnic Fusion (a group
that combines Balinese Gamelan and Jazz), and explored Balinese ethnical music
elements, using traditional musical instruments developed modernly.
With his
group band he formed, Balawan arranged traditional songs which the author is
not recognized up to modern music. Balawan is a unique guitarist that has
released several albums. What makes him unique is his method of playing guitar,
he does not pick the strings, but he touches them like playing a piano, this
technique is known as tapping.
Taufik
Darusalam one of the spectators said Balawan’s performance was superb and
stunning. “Balawan is an extraordinary guitar player, he has a certain
technique only unique to himselfwhich not everyone can do,” he said. The author
of the book titled Linear greatly admired Balawan’s spectacular performance.
